15 photos show life on one Merseyside estate

In the 1950s people were relocated from inner-city Liverpool to new towns, which had been built across the region. It was known as ‘slum clearances’ and saw hundreds of families whose homes were knocked down relocated to new areas.

Whole new communities were created in one fell swoop as tenants of all ages started new lives on the estates. After the success of developments in Speke and Aintree, plans for an industrial estate in Kirkby were considered and although World War II delayed the progress, eventually Kirkby Industrial Estate was born.

The ECHO has shared these fascinating photographs of Kirkby taken between the 1950s and 1990s courtesy of our archives, Mirrorpix. A number of images show early days in Kirkby when new houses and developments were built in the 1950s.

Other images show the faces of those who have lived there through the years. A trip back in time, these photos are a fascinating glimpse into Kirkby’s past and communities through the generations. You can see 15 rare photos in our gallery below.
