171 cases of work related violence reported to Dublin City Council last year

171 cases of work related violence were reported to Dublin City Council last year, a rise of 31 from 140 incidents in 2023.

The figure includes incidents of anti-social behaviour, verbal abuse, threat of physical violence and physical violence. it also includes incidents reported by members of Dublin Fire Brigade.

Last week, a 61-year-old caretaker was left with cuts and bruises after being physically assaulted while working at a flat complex in Ballybough. Dublin City Council confirmed the incident was reported to them on January 9th.

A spokeswoman told Dublin Live: “Upon receipt of this report, an investigation was initiated immediately, as per DCC procedures. DCC do not comment on individual cases.

“Control measures are in place to reduce the risk of work related violence to employees as far as reasonably practicable, including recent training on Dealing with Aggressive Behaviour for staff across a number of Departments.

“Work related violence is categorised into 5 categories. In 2024 there were 171 cases of work related violence (WRV) reported to Dublin City Council (including Dublin Fire Brigade ) compared to a total of 140 cases reported in 2023.

“While there has been an increase in almost all categories, the marked increases identified as per DCC reports are in anti-social behaviour, verbal abuse and threat of physical violence, as opposed to physical violence itself”.

There were 22 incidents of physical violence, 54 threats of physical violence, 64 incidents of verbal abuse, 28 incidents of anti-social behaviour and three other incidents reported to Dublin City Council in 2024.
