5 of the biggest Dublin stories you may have missed this week

The Christmas and New Year celebrations are over and most of us are back to work and still trying to figure out what day it is.

It’s hard to believe we’re almost a week into 2025 and with schools returning on Monday, the nation will be back into the full swing of things. That is, of course, unless the weather has a say in things.

The new year has started on a chilly note with the big freeze seeing temperatures plummet and snow hitting parts of the country. And that’s not the only thing that’s occupied the minds of people across the capital this week.

We’ve put together a roundup of some of the biggest stories across the city from the last seven days to help you catch up just in case you missed anything.

No let up in the freezing temperatures

Many parts of the country woke up to snow this morning and while Dublin has mostly escaped it for now, there is a chance it will hit this evening. Whether the snow arrives or not, we’re in for a Baltic few days with a Status Yellow snow and ice warning in place until Thursday with temperatures possibly sinking to as low as -10C. And the reports of a big freeze have seen shoppers spring into action with supermarket shelves across the country emptied of bread and milk over the weekend.

Funeral of Blanchardstown couple killed in alleged hit-and-run

The funeral took place this week of a couple who were killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident in Blanchardstown on St Stephen’s Day. Anthony Hogg (40) and his wife Georgina Hogg-Moore (39) died after they were struck while crossing a road near Blanchardstown Shopping Centre at around 5:45pm. The packed out funeral service in the Church of St Philip the Apostle in Mountainview heard how the couple were the “life and soul” of the family. John Halpin (45) of Whitestown Avenue in Blanchardstown has appeared in court charged in connection with the incident.

Beloved pub to shut its doors

Customers were devastated to hear that popular city centre pub The Living Room is to close its doors for good. The Cathal Brugha Street venue confirmed its last day will be Monday, January 6. However the team has vowed it will be back, teasing an exciting new chapter which will be announced soon.

Hospital imposes visiting restrictions

With flu, RSV and Covid all on the rise, one Dublin Hospital imposed visiting restrictions. Tallaght Hospital, Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, Naas General Hospital, Regional Hospital Mullingar and Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore have introduced a range of restrictions including visits only on compassionate grounds or only allowing one or two visitors per day. The HSE said certain exceptions may be made with the agreement of ward staff and they hope to lift the restrictions as soon as circumstances allow.

First baby of the year

It only took 19 seconds for the first Dublin baby of the year to arrive. Baby Bradley was the first bundle of joy of the new year, born to proud parents Eve Colley and Eric Tyrell from the capital at precisely 12:00:19am at the National Maternity Hospital on Holles Street. Just nine minutes later, another baby boy was welcomed into the world across town at the Rotunda Hospital, with Martha Gilroy Kelly giving birth at 12:09am.
