A9 crash horror as lorry and two cars collide amid snow and ice warnings

A lorry and two cars have reportedly been involved in a horror crash on the A9 in the Highlands as the area has been hit by snow and ice.

Emergency services are currently in attendance at the collision in Shalmstry, near Thurso. The stretch of road currently remains closed in both directions.

It is currently unknown if there are any injuries. It comes as the region was issued with a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.

The alert, which came into place at midday on Sunday, covers snow showers, ice and rain. The conditions have led to the temporary closures of several schools in the council area today, including Keiss Primary, Lochinver Primary, Portree High School and Portree Primary.

Travel disruption is likely to take place today due to flooding from heavy rain and thawing from snow, the Met Office said. The alert will remain in place until 11am on Monday.

A statement from Traffic Scotland reads: “A9 Shalmstry (South of Thurso) closed in both directions due to a collision. Please avoid the area, if at all possible.”
