Armed police in Huddersfield street after man seen with ‘knife and baton’

Armed police were called to a Huddersfield neighbourhood following reports of a man trying to get into a house while holding a knife and a baton.

Officers on the ground as well as the police helicopter were deployed to search for a suspect who was spotted in the Willwood Avenue area of Oakes last night. Police dogs were also present, according to locals who said that entrances to the estate had been ‘sealed off’ by police. Willwood Avenue runs between Reinwood Road and Oakes Road South and passes Reinwood Junior School.

Police said 30-year-old man was arrested later in the Deighton area of Huddersfield on suspicion of assault, possessing an offensive weapon and drugs offences. A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called to Willwood Avenue, Huddersfield shortly after 8pm last night (9 January) to reports of a man banging on the door of a house and trying to get in.

“The man was believed to be a holding a knife and a baton. Armed officers were dispatched to the scene and a search of the area was undertaken, assisted by the police helicopter.

“A 30-year-old man was arrested just before 9pm in the Deighton area of Huddersfield on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, assaulting an emergency worker, possessing a controlled class B drug with intent to supply and two counts of harassment. The man remains in custody and investigations are continuing.”
