Arrest made after abduction attempt of girl, 3, in Wolverhampton city centre

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to abduct a three-year-old girl in a West Midlands city. The child was with an older relative when the incident took place.

West Midlands Police say the abduction attempt was made in Leicester Street, Wolverhampton, at around 5.15pm on Thursday evening (January 9). Following “extensive” enquiries, a suspect has been arrested in the city this afternoon (January 11).

The man was detained on suspicion of attempting to kidnap the young girl and remains in custody for questioning. Thankfully, the child was not hurt and she and her family are recieving support from West Midlands Police.

West Midlands Police believes this was an isolated incident. An active investigation remains ongoing, with officers appealing for information.

Det Insp Nicola Pestel, at Wolverhampton CID, said: “We’ve had officers from across our local teams working hard on this investigation. We’ve been following a number of lines of enquiry and this arrest is a significant step forward. We fully understand the concerns this will have caused but we do believe it is an isolated incident.”
