Baby girl died of brain haemorrhage after pram hit by car

A baby girl died from a brain haemorrhage after the pram she was in was struck by a car in a multi-storey car park. Sophia Kelemen, who was six months old, was seriously injured in the incident, which happened on the ground floor of the car park in the centre of Tenby on January 2.

She was airlifted to a Cardiff hospital but died from her injuries the following day. An inquest into her death was opened on Tuesday morning by Gareth Lewis, assistant coroner for Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, at County Hall in Haverfordwest. Speaking at the inquest, PC Carrie Sheridan, coroner’s officer for Pembrokeshire, said Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a collision involving a pram and a vehicle from the Welsh Ambulance Service at 4.04pm on January 2. Miss Sheridan said: “Sophia Beatrice Kelemen, from Wigan, was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales where she underwent emergency medical treatment. She died on January 3. Cause of death was given as 1A, intracranial haemorrhage, and 1B, road traffic collision.”

Mr Lewis, citing the ongoing police investigation into the fatal collision, adjourned the inquest to a date to be fixed. In connection with Sophia’s death, Flaviu Naghi, 33, of Irvine Street, Leigh, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a license and without insurance. Naghi appeared at Swansea Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, January 4, where he was remanded to appear before Swansea Crown Court on February 7.
