Important changes to bulky waste collections have been announced for some Leicestershire residents. Charnwood Borough Council has announced that flood-affected residents will receive free collections of damaged household items.
The announcement comes after record-breaking floods forced hundreds of residents from their homes last week. Emergency services responded to more than 380 calls in 24 hours last Monday (January 6), as rising water levels caused widespread damage across the county.
Special arrangements have also been made for the disposal of used sandbags across the borough. Leicestershire County Council’s recycling centres will accept the items, with collection services available for those unable to access the sites.

Affected residents can book the free collections by calling 01509 634666 from Monday (January 13). The council is strongly advising residents to photograph all items before disposal, as insurance companies may require evidence of damaged goods.
A spokeswoman for Charnwood Borough Council said the measures were being implemented to support residents affected by the floods. The free collection service will help households clear damaged items from their properties.
Those unable to access recycling sites can arrange for crews to collect a limited number of sandbags. All collections must be pre-booked through the dedicated phone number.
