A crash involving a car and a motorcycle caused traffic chaos around Newton Abbot this morning (January 14), leaving the South Devon Highway temporarily closed southbound, and causing miles of tailbacks as far back as Teignmouth.
The incident was reported to police at 8.15am, with the two vehicles colliding near the Penn Inn roundabout. The southbound carriageway of the South Devon Highway was closed at 8.40am, with the closure remaining in place for about an hour.
During this time, heavy traffic built up in every direction from the Penn Inn roundabout, including around four miles of tailbacks along the Highway from Penn Inn to Sandygate, as well as queues of almost nine miles along the A381 and onto the A383, between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 8.15am on Tuesday 14 January following reports of a road traffic collision, involving a car and a motorcycle, on the South Devon Highway near Newton Abbot.
“The ambulance service was also called and the motorcycle rider taken to hospital. Her injuries are not considered life-changing or life-threatening. The road was reopened by 9.50am.”
The road has now returned to normal, although traffic took a while to clear after the road was reopened. For full details on the incident, visit our blog here.
