Families across North Staffordshire have been waiting for their bins to be collected as crews play catch up after last week’s wintry blast. The snow and ice that hit Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle, and the Moorlands has impacted on collections around the area.
Full bins have been sat on streets as residents have mainly been advised to ‘leave them out’. It comes as local authorities have not been able to provide exact dates for when the waste will be collected.
Operations were scuppered after heavy snow hit North Staffordshire last week and coupled with freezing temperatures left scores of side roads barely passable. The conditions also saw roads shut and schools forced to shut.
Now households are waiting to see just when their bins will be emptied. This is the latest from the councils responsible:
Stoke-on-Trent City Council
On the city council’s official website, residents are advised there are delays – and not to log requests for bin collections.
It states: “We are currently experiencing delays with our bin deliveries due to multiple factors. To help us manage this disruption, please avoid logging duplicate requests for bin deliveries. We’re working hard to resolve the issue so please bear with us and we will deliver as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”

The last update on the local authority’s Facebook page went up on January 10 and confirmed would collect any missed blue and grey bins this week – with residents asked to leave them out. To help with the catch-up the brown bin collection was suspended.
Those residents subscribing to the service are asked to present it with the grey bin on the noraml collection day week commencing January 20. The post added: “Our crews will be catching up with collections through the week and hope to be back on schedule within the next few days.”
Newcastle Borough Council
The local authority say crews tried to make as many collections as possible last week when the wintry weather hit. This week has seen the start of a ‘catch-up plan’. The council says ‘our priority is to empty containers and clear streets’.
Officials have issued the following updates this week:
Recycling
Any resident scheduled for a recycling collection from January 6 to January 10 should put the blue recycling bin and bag out. The council says it has extra crews catching up on collections this week.
However if residents do not need a recycling collection – they should present it next week on the normal collection day. If the collection is due on week commencing January 13, then households are asked to put out their bin as usual – and allow extra time for collection.

Household rubbish
As with recycling, if the collection was due last week – bins should be put out with extra crews working to collect them. If the collection is due on week commencing January 13, then they should be put out – and as above, allowing extra time for collection.
Food waste service
The caddy should go out on the normal collection day – and allow an extra day for collection.
Officials say as it stands they are not accepting missed collection reports. However anything missed on or after January 20 can be reported in the usual way.
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council
As with Stoke-on-Trent, and brown bin collections were suspended until January 20 as crews catch up on the backlog. Residents have been told to keep their bins out as crews continue to play catch-up.
The Moorlands was hard hit by the snow with rural areas barely passable. Councillor Joe Porter, who represents Brown Edge and Endon, has been seeking answers from the local authority – after no updates appeared on the council’s Facebook page or official website since last week.
Families in the Moorlands are being told to leave their bins out
Cllr Porter said: “Apologies to local residents who have been impacted by missed bin collections across Brown Edge and Endon.
“I have been in contact with the leader of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, cabinet member and council officers to find out some answers on the delayed bin collections as a result of the extreme weather conditions. Local residents are advised to please keep your missed blue lidded general waste bins out alongside putting out your grey recycling bins this week. The bin crews are working hard to clear the backlog as soon as possible.”
Bin crews catching up on collections in Endon on January 15
This morning and crews have been around Endon to collect the household waste bins. Cllr Porter added: “The bin crews are out and about this morning dealing with missed bin collections. Thank you to local residents in Brown Edge and Endon for your understanding and patience during the extreme weather conditions.”
