Birmingham tip opening hours decision revealed as bin strikes take hold

Council bosses hope to minimise the impact of bin strikes in Birmingham by extending the opening hours of household recycling centres across the city. Industrial action is planned for a further 11 days in 2025 after the first day of strikes on Monday, January 6.

Refuse workers will walkout on January 14, 22 and 30 – with the remaining strike dates in February, March and April. The bin strikes were announced after crunch talks over pay broke down between Unite, the union representing refuse workers, and Birmingham City Council.

In hope of mitigating disruption, the local authority has announced it will extend opening hours at household recycling centres. This could be during the week or at weekends.

Residents have been urged to check the council’s website to find out exact times. Cabinet member for Environment and Transport, Coun Majid Mahmood, said: “We’re supporting our residents as much as possible during industrial action to minimise disruption.

“So, from Monday, January 13, some of our household recycling centres will have extended opening hours. This may be during the week, or at weekends.

“Please check our website for the exact times for our sites. Please book a slot. These will have the extended hours reflected and more people will be able to attend.”

A council spokesperson added: “We’re supporting our residents as much as possible during industrial action to help minimise disruption. From January 13, Kings Norton, Perry Barr and Tyseley recycling centres will have extended opening hours. Check our website for exact times and book a slot.”
