Bridge strike shuts Cross City Line live – third incident at same bridge in a week

Another vehicle has struck a railway bridge in Birmingham shutting a busy commuter route for the second time today and the third time in a week. West Midlands Railway has confirmed a second collision at the Summer Road railway bridge in Erdington on Tuesday (January 6) in as many hours.

The first strike involving a lorry took place at around 10am and at around 12.30pm the railway firm confirmed the bridge had been hit again halting Cross City Line services north of Birmingham, to Erdington, Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield.

West Midlands Railway posted on X and said: “A SECOND bridge collision at Erdington. The Cross City North is again blocked. Ticket acceptance with National Express West Midlands has been requested.”

The bus firm said it has diverted its 28 and 96 services as Gravelly Lane which joins Summer Road, is shut. It said: “Gravelly Lane Erdington is currently closed. Bus numbers 28 and 96 diverted in both directions via Station Road. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

The bridge strikes today come foud days after the same bridge was struck last Friday (January 3) and two months after the bridge was struck by a lorry driver who has been charged ith drink-driing.
