Bus catches fire in Southend as fire crews block off-road to fight blaze that saw vehicle ‘completely alight’

A bus caught fire in the middle of an Essex city, forcing the road to be shut, and multiple fire crews attended the scene. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called out to Southend on Wednesday (January 15) after the blaze broke out on a single-decker bus.

The incident took place in Short Street just before 8pm with the bus becoming “completely alight” as firefighters arrived at the scene. The road was closed for some time while crews fought the fire.

Everyone who was on the bus was evacuated safely and there were no reports of any injuries. Firefighters got the blaze under control within an hour.

A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters were called to Short Street, Southend, at 7.53pm last night (Wednesday) after reports of a bus fire.

“On arrival, firefighters confirmed a single-decker bus was completely alright and worked to extinguish it by 8.36pm. The cause has been recorded as accidental.”
