A popular Irish Pub is set for a new lease of life after plans to rebuild it were given the go-ahead.
A little over a year after Duffy’s Pub in Kilkelly, Mayo, collapsed trapping five people inside, Mayo County Council has given the go-ahead to rebuild it.
The collapse was the result of a nearby house being torn down beside it when the local pub, collapsed beside it.
At the time of the collapse on October 31, 2023, a video of the area that was seen by Galway Beo, showed the utter devastation from the building collapse.
Confused locals could be seen walking passed the collapsed building clearly shocked by the damage done. The pub was reduced to rubble, with garda units in conversation with locals. To the left of the collapsed building, a digger could be seen working on demolishing a building that was beside Duffy’s. A nearby lamppost also collapsed due to the damage and a white van also took some of the impact from the collapse.
The remainder of the original building will now be demolished and replaced with a new bar and lounge area with outdoor space. The new development in Kilkeely will also include the construction of three new apartments in the plan.
It will no doubt be an exciting time for Duffy’s and the locals with the pub having been a centrepiece of the town for the past 120 years.
