A Persimmon development of 170 homes in Consett has been approved by Durham County Council.
Members of the council’s planning committee accepted the application from the housebuilder for new homes in the Templetown area.
As part of the plans, 17 houses will be sold at a discount to market value, as potential first homes, with a range of two- to five-bedroom terraced, semi-detached and detached properties being provided.
The designs of these homes will aim to reflect the local heritage of Consett, with a contemporary design style that is unique to the town.
As part of a long-term commitment to the local area, Persimmon will provide over £970,000 in contributions, including £530,000 to secondary education and £82,000 to healthcare.

A new 1.8km network of pedestrian and cycle paths will be provided around the homes, which will come equipped with electric vehicle charging points and solar panels.
A children’s play area will also be built in the area, alongside an open space which will be the equivalent size to eight football pitches. On top of this, there will be a heritage trail of information boards, which detail the local history of Consett.
Adam McVickers, Land & Planning Manager at Persimmon Durham, said: “We are pleased that Durham Council has approved these plans for 170 much-needed high quality homes.
“This development will provide a range of energy efficient homes suitable for first-time buyers, families and downsizers alike at prices people can afford.”
