Cops close Scots street as new Chinese restaurant goes up in flames

A Scots street has been shut down after a restaurant went up in flames tonight.

Emergency services are currently on the scene at Westwood Square in East Kilbride where the Orient was on fire.

Dramatic video footage sent to Lanarkshire Live shows huge flames and thick black smoke engulfing the roof of the Chinese restaurant which reportedly only opened a few weeks ago.

Gathering crowds looked on in horror as the fire raged dangerously close to neighbouring shops and flats above the square.

One eye-witness said: “I hope people in the flats are out safe. I really hope no one is hurt.”

It is not yet known if anyone has been injured in the ongoing incident.

Police have closed Redcliffe Drive and are asking drivers to find alternative routes while multiple fire crews battle to bring the blaze under control.

It is understood staff and customers were evacuated from the nearby Tesco Metro as the fire rapidly developed.

A spokesperson said: “Around 5.30pm on Wednesday, January 15 we received a report of a fire at Westwood Square, East Kilbride.

“Emergency services are in attendance. Redcliffe Drive is currently closed.

“Motorists are asked to find alternative routes.”

Scottish Fire and Rescue and the Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
