County Durham road remains closed 20 hours after five-vehicle crash as weather prevents recovery

Severe weather has resulted in a road being closed over 20 hours following a five-vehicle collision.

Emergency services were called to the A68 Tow Law at around 4.40pm on Sunday following reports of a multi-vehicle collision.

North East Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulance crews and one clinical team leader to the scene and three people were taken to University Hospital of North Durham. All patients are believed to have suffered minor injuries, police confirmed.

However, the road remains closed between West Lane junction and Butsfield Lane crossroads due to severe weather which is preventing the vehicles from being recovered from the scene. The road will remain closed until weather allows for the vehicles to be recovered.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a multi-vehicle collision on the A68 Tow Law yesterday (Sunday, January 5) at around 4.40pm. The collision involved five vehicles, and several of the drivers involved attended hospital with minor injuries.

“The road between West Lane junction and Butsfield Lane crossroads remains closed until weather allows for the vehicles to be recovered. Drivers are advised to find alternative routes.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called to a road traffic incident on Sunday 5 January at 4:54pm on the junction of A68 and West Lane in Bishop Auckland. We dispatched three ambulance crews and one clinical team leader. Three patients were taken to University Hospital of North Durham.”
