Dad shot dead in Christmas Eve police siege was ‘hero who apprehended girl’s killer’

A dad-of-two who was shot dead in a police standoff was a hero who apprehended a teenage girl’s killer in Birmingham city centre. Marcus Meade died at a property in Redditch on Christmas Eve – but two decades ago he was recognised for his bravery.

Rosie Ross, 16, was stabbed to death in a random attack as she sunbathed with a friend in Centenary Square in May 2001. Killer Inderjit Kainth, from Handsworth, fled the scene, but was caught by passer-by Marcus – then known as Marcus Freckleton – and two other witnesses, Matthew Brown and Kain Jason.

They were recognised for their bravery with a Birmingham Post and Mail Local Hero award in 2003. Kainth later pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility and was detained indefinitely at a top security hospital.

Mr Meade’s loved ones said he was one of the “kindest souls you could ever meet” and “his bravery and selflessness were unparalleled.” A crowdfunder to raise funds for his funeral – with a target of £12,000 – has been set up. It has already raised more than £6,000.

Marcus died after officers from West Mercia Police were called following concerns for the welfare of an occupant at a property on Fownhope Close, in Redditch, at around 2pm, on Christmas Eve. Police had attempted to negotiate with Mr Meade, who was armed with a knife, for several hours, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.

A Taser was then discharged, and a firearms officer fired a single shot which hit Mr Meade in the chest, the IOPC said. Officers attempted immediate first aid, but he died at the scene at around 8pm.

A GoFundMe page, set up by his sibling Jahziah Meade said: “Hi everyone, I’m one of Marcus Meade’s younger siblings, and as many of you know, our beloved Marcus was tragically taken from us on Christmas Eve in the most heartbreaking way.

“Those who knew Marcus will know what an incredible person he was. He was one of the kindest souls you could ever meet. His bravery and selflessness were unparalleled—he even apprehended Rose’s killer in Centenary Square, Birmingham, for which he was awarded a medal of bravery.

“Marcus a father, brother, and friend, and his absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives. He would have celebrated his 40th birthday next year and watched his two beautiful children grow.

“We are reaching out to ask for your help in raising funds towards his funeral costs, a headstone, and a place where everyone who loved Marcus can gather to honour and celebrate his life. Any amount, no matter how small, would mean the world to us and help us give Marcus the farewell he deserves. Thank you for your kindness and support during this incredibly difficult time. With love.” To donate to the fund, click here.
