Date announced for Coventry city centre car park to close for good

A closure date has been announced for a multi-storey car park in Coventry city centre. The council has taken to social media to warn locals that they have just a couple of weeks to continue to use Barracks car park.

This is because it will be closing permanently on Friday, January 31. The huge 460-space multi-storey car park is set to be bulldozed to make way for the City Centre South scheme.

Council bosses have pre-empted concerns about the loss of the car park by posting the nearest alternative places are at Salt Lane, Lower Precinct or New Union Street.

The huge city centre south scheme will, the council says, rejuvenate this part of the city centre with new shops, homes, bars and restaurants. The loss of the Barracks car park comes after the council re-opened a previously closed place to park.

Whitefriars Street car park is now open again after it was closed in January 2021. This was down to “financially unsustainable” rise in empty spaces in car parks across the city during the pandemic.
