Demolition proposed for Tyne Met College building in Wallsend

Plans have been submitted for the demoltion of a major building on the former site of Tyne Metropolitan College in Wallsend.

The application, supported by demoliton specialists Thompsons of Prudhoe, states that “Building A is in very poor condition and now redunant from an educational use perspective.”

A demolition notification from education provider Tyne Coast College also states that following a review of Tyne Metropolitan College’s estates, a £7m investment would be needed to maintain A block over the next five years. The college said that teaching in the building can be transfered to other blocks, with three floors of the building already no longer in use.

Tyne Coast College’s submission said: “The college has completed a demolition application on the North Tyneside planning portal to commence September 2026 and as part of this notices need to be publicly displayed on front and rear gates. This briefing is to inform colleagues and assure that this application will not affect traching, as this will be timetabled elsewere on the Battle Hill campus.

“Tyne Coast College is committed to review all options to improve the facilites at Tyne Metropolitan College.”

If approved by North Tyneside Council planners, Thompsons engineers will conduct a structural inspection prior to demolition, including requesting the origianl consrtiuction drawings of the building. In addition, the firm will draw up a traffic management plan’ to mitigate against traffic pressures.

Demolition would also take place during the holidat period, when students are not present and third-party activity is reduced. At the time of publication, a decision had yet been issued on the application.
