Derbyshire police have issued a warning to drivers in and around Derby city centre after six vehicles crashed on the same stretch of road during three separate incidents. Police have been called to a one, two and three-vehicle collision on the A601 St Alkmund’s Way this morning leading to heavy traffic in the city.
The first call was received by police at 5.52am after a single vehicle collision. The female driver was not seriously injured, and the car was recovered a little after 7am.
As officers attended this collision, another incident between two cars occurred close to the Leonardo Hotel. The driver of one of these cars was taken to hospital and is being treated for back pain.
Then, a short time later at around 8.55am, officers were called to another collision – this time involving three cars. A spokesperson for Derbyshire police said: “Officers are currently attending another collision on the same stretch of road that took place at 8.55am and involved three cars.
“There are no serious injuries as a result of the collision, however, the road is currently not blocked but there is traffic due to recovery of the vehicles.” Derbyshire police have issued a reminder to motorists, urging them to “take care” around the city.
A spokesperson said: “Drivers are asked to take extra care on this stretch of road due to icy conditions in the area. Further gritting of the road is taking place however caution is advised.”
Elsewhere in the city, the link road between the A6 near Thulston and Junction 2 of the A50 was closed following an incident first reported at around 7.30am. The closure was confirmed by both Inrix and National Highways, with the latter warning of 15-minute delays and long queues in the area.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The link road from the A6 south to the A50 eastbound near Aston-on-Trent is closed following a single vehicle collision. East Midlands Ambulance Service are at the scene. Delays of 15 minutes and approximately three miles of congestion on the A50 approaching the junction as traffic in the area self diverts.”
