Dog walkers lost in deep snow rescued from Eryri mountain

Dog walkers who got lost in deep snow and freezing conditions, had to be rescued from a mountain in Eryri yesterday. South Snowdonia Search and Rescue Team were called to Carnedd y Filiast as darkness fell.

A statement by the search and rescue team said: “Yesterday at 14:35, the team was called out to to assist a man, woman and their dog that had been walking on Carnedd y Filiast. The walkers had set off early in the morning and hoped to have been back before it got dark.

“Unfortunately, they lost their way and were wandering through deep snow in freezing conditions. As darkness was approaching, no head torches and limited phone battery, they made the decision to call for mountain rescue.” Get all the latest Gwynedd news by signing up to our newsletter.

The spokesperson added: “A small team was deployed and with the guidance of the callout coordinator over the phone, the walkers and the team met, then the team was able to take them down safely. Everyone and the dog was fine and looking forward to get home and warming up.”

Walkers were advised, if heading out onto the hills, to make sure they pack a rucksack appropriately, even if they think they are not likely to use a particular item. Pack a head torch and always make sure you’re competent enough to do mountains in winter conditions and you have the right equipment.

A spokesperson added: “Do not hesitate to call mountain rescue if you think you might be in danger, we’re here to help.”
