Driver dies in early hours crash as car hits wall in Bilston Road

A driver has died following an early-hours crash in Wolverhampton. The man had been trapped in the car after it hit a wall at the junction of Ettingshall Road and Bilston Road.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.35am on Tuesday, January 7. Medics worked with firefighters to free the man, who was in a critical condition, but despite their best efforts, he could not be saved.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Ambulance staff arrived to find a car which had collided with a wall. The driver, a man, was trapped and in a critical condition. Ambulance staff worked with fire colleagues to rapidly extricate him from the car and commenced advanced life support. Sadly, despite everyone’s best efforts, the man’s life couldn’t be saved.”

Bilston Road remained closed in both directions this morning as investigation work was carried out. The road was shut between Stowheath Lane to Cable Street.

West Midlands Metro has warned passengers that trams between Priestfield and Wolverhampton were unable to operate. Tickets and passes were being accepted on National Express West Midlands’ bus service 79, and West Midlands Railway trains between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
