Drivers issued warning ahead of major Plymouth closures

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead after Plymouth City Council confirmed it will close Laira Bridge Road and surrounding streets on Tuesday and Wednesday night for resurfacing work.

The road at the junction of Laira Bridge Road and Finnigan Road is being resurfaced, which will involve milling the current surface before laying hot asphalt. The new surface is expected to last seven to 10 years.

Work will be carried out on the inbound side on Tuesday night [January 14] and on the outbound side on Wednesday night [January 15], starting at 7pm and finishing by 6am. This will affect access to and from surrounding roads, with diversions in place.

Motorists who come from or are heading to locations east of the city – including Plymstock, Sherford, Brixton, Yealmpton, Modbury – are urged to find alternative routes on those evenings or head off early.

Tuesday night (inbound side)

Billacombe Road and Laira Bridge will be closed inbound from Billacombe Roundabout to Embankment Lane. One lane will also be closed on the outbound side from Heles Terrace to The Ride, to provide a safe working area.

This will mean the following restrictions will also be in place:

  • Two lanes closed on the inbound side of Billacombe Road, from opposite Encombe Street to Billacombe Roundabout
  • One lane closed on the approach to Billacombe Roundabout from Breakwater Road
  • One lane closed on Billacombe Roundabout
  • One lane closed on the southbound side of Embankment Lane, with no right turn onto Laira Bridge Road (left turn access maintained)
  • Finnigan Road closed between Faraday Road and Laira Bridge Road
  • One lane closed on the southbound side of The Ride, with no right turn onto Laira Bridge Road (left turn access maintained)

Wednesday night (outbound side)

Laira Bridge Road will be closed outbound from Embankment Lane to The Ride. This will mean the following restrictions will also be in place:

  • One lane closed on the southbound side of Embankment Lane, with no left turn onto Laira Bridge Road (right turn access maintained)
  • Bus lane closed on the inbound side of Embankment Road from Stanley Place to Heles Terrace
  • One lane closed on the outbound side of Embankment Road, with no right turn onto Laira Bridge Road
  • One lane closed on Finnigan Road, with no right turn onto Laira Bridge Road (left turn access maintained)
  • Inbound side of Heles Terrace closed

Signed diversions will be in place via Haye Road, Plympton, Marsh Mills and Embankment Road. Some bus routes will be affected – further information about service diversions can be found on the Plymouth Citybus website at www.plymouthbus.co.uk/plymstock-laira-bridge-road-closure.
