Drivers warned of full M4 closures for resurfacing work with long diversion routes in place

Drivers have been warned of disruption and delays on the M4 in the coming weeks as resurfacing works are undertaken on the motorway. National Highways has said parts of the motorway will be closed between January and March for essential resurfacing work in Wiltshire.

The work will be carried out between junctions 14 and 15, near Membury services, with some parts of the motorway seeing overnight closures later this month. Lane restrictions will also be in place, reducing traffic to just one lane, for five nights from next week.

The hard shoulder, lanes one and two will be closed from January 13 to January 18. For the first three days, Membury services will remain open, but access to the services will be closed from Thursday, January 16, for two nights, National Highways advises. Full carriageway closures will begin on January 27.

Victoria Bathe, National Highways Project Manager, said: “We apologise for any temporary disruption this may cause but this vital resurfacing work will provide a smoother, quieter road for both drivers and communities nearby for many years to come. We plan our work carefully to minimise disruption and we are carrying out the majority of this maintenance at night when traffic is at its lightest.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank drivers for their patience and remind those planning on passing through this section of the M4 or using one of our diversion routes to allow extra time to complete their journeys.”

Highways staff will be undertaking the work overnight, between 9pm and 6am, and will work Monday to Fridays.
