Edinburgh A720 city bypass closed after car bursts into flames on carriageway

A car has burst into flames on the Edinburgh city bypass as rush hour commuters have been warned of delays.

Emergency services rushed to the westbound carriageway on the A720 near Straiton shortly before 7am on Thursday, January 9, following reports of a car “well alight.”

Two pump appliances, one from Liberton and one from Dalkeith, are currently in attendance using hose reels and breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze with the bypass currently closed.

There are no reports of injuries as live traffic images show smoke rising among the darkness with a number of emergency service resources on scene.

One motorist passing the scene reported the incident to Traffic Scotland saying: “There is a car on fire on #A720 westbound just west of Straiton junction – fire engines in attendance and both lanes currently blocked.”

Traffic Scotland warned motorists: NEW 07:19 #A720 – Lothianburn The Westbound carriageway is CLOSED due to a police incident. Delays are approx. 19 mins.”

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: “We received a call at 6.44am to a report of a vehicle well alight on the Edinburgh city bypass westbound between Straiton and Lothianburn.

“Crews from Liberton and Dalkeith are in attendance using hose reels and breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. There are no reported injuries.”
