Eight weeks of works are planned at junctions on a Grimsby street to improve road safety.
North East Lincolnshire Council has awarded Hull-based EC Surfacing Ltd a £209,000 contract to make road safety improvements to Armstrong Street. The works are expected to last eight weeks, though when they will occur has not yet been confirmed.
It follows on from a decision in December 2023 to introduce a 20mph speed limit along the street, between Pyewipe Road and Charlton Street. Other safety measures were also agreed, such as reprioritisation of the Beeson Street and Armstrong Street junction. These were prompted by a residents’ petition organised by nearby West Marsh Community Centre about Beeson Street and Armstrong Street junction, and input from Humberside Police.
It is understood the works will involve replacement of existing damaged kerbs, channels and road resurfacing. A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said: “The council are investing to improve the infrastructure to the Armstrong/Beeson Street and Armstrong/Charlton Street intersections which will seek to improve safety and reduce speed by road users.

“We will engage with the successful principal contractor to confirm their programme for delivery of the works, now the contract has been awarded.” The council works have been preceded by Cadent Gas works in Charlton Street and Armstrong Street.
These were suspended in September when local business owners and residents complained about the traffic measures, and the council found traffic management arrangements were “not suitable”. They have since successfully taken place.
The road improvement works are pencilled in for from March 10, but as mentioned above this is not yet the confirmed schedule.
