Emergency midnight evacuation of sleeping residents as fire breaks out in Bristol city centre

A residential building had to be evacuated in the middle of the night in Bristol city centre after a fire broke out around midnight. A large amount of rubbish ignited on Marlborough Street in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday, January 14, which put residents of the neighbouring building at risk. Those sleeping were woken up and told to leave their homes until the fire was under control.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said crews from across Bristol were called to reports of a fire at 12.02am today. Firefighters arrived to find a pile of rubbish alight. The nearby building was searched by fire crews and a full evacuation was carried out.

Firefighters from Temple, Southmead, Bedminster, Hicks Gate, Kingswood and Portishead arrived at the scene to extinguish the fire. The fire service said the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement: “Crews used three high pressure hose reels and one 45mm covering jet to extinguish the flames. A thermal image camera and gas monitors were used to check whether the fire had spread.

“One firefighter wore breathing apparatus for safety. The building was searched by crews and a full evacuation took place. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.”
