Exeter city centre road sealed off after gas leak near train station – updates

A cordon is in place in Exeter city centre after reports of a suspected gas leak near Exeter Central Station. Parts of the city have been closed to pedestrians and traffic as emergency services attend the scene on Queen Street.

An eyewitness has told DevonLive: “Gas leak Queen St leak Exeter. Fire engine and other response vehicles. Closed off”. Pictures from the scene show fire crews and emergency vehicles as the street is cordoned off.

The witness added that people inside an Exeter College building are reportedly not allowed out, and other buildings have reportedly been evacuated.

People have been asked to avoid the area where possible. Devon Alert said: “Due to an incident at Exeter Central Train Station, parts of the city centre are closed off to traffic and pedestrians. Please expect delays and find an alternative route if possible.”

Trains in the area have been cancelled, with all lines near Exeter Central closed. National Rail said: “We have been informed of a gas leak near Exeter Central station. This means that the lines through this station are blocked.

“For further information or onward travel advice please speak to a member of staff or use a station help point. If you would prefer to use local buses to continue your journey please check Traveline – South Western Railway tickets are not valid on local buses unless stated above.”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue has been contacted for further information.
