Five days of madness led to men, women and children being locked up for 182 years

Violent scenes unfolded in Southport, Liverpool city centre and Walton in summer last year

The actions of scores of men, women and children over the course of a matter of days last summer led to them being locked up for almost 200 years. Violent scenes unfolded in Southport on the evening of Tuesday, July 30 2024, following the fatal stabbings of six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe and nine-year-old Alice DaSilva Aguiar.

Similar disturbances then unfolded in Liverpool city centre and Walton the following Saturday, August 3. This has led to a total of 88 rioters being sentenced to 182 years and four months behind bars to date, and the ECHO has now taken a look at some of those who found themselves in the dock of Liverpool Crown Court.

Derek Drummond

Derek Drummond punched a police officer in the face then said he “let the kids down”. He was handed three years behind bars.

Declan Geiran

Declan Geiran attempted to set fire to a police van near St George’s Hall. He was locked up for 30 months after admitting violent disorder and arson.

Liam Riley

Liam Riley called one officer a “traitor and a Muslim lover” during the disorder. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder and racially aggravated threatening behaviour and was jailed for 20 months.

John O’Malley

John O’Malley, 43, of Cambridge Gardens in Southport.(Image: Merseyside Police )

John O’Malley was said to have been “active in and at the heart of the violence”. He was locked up for 32 months.

William Morgan

William Morgan, 69 and of Linton Street in Walton.

William Morgan armed himself with a wooden bat and formed “part of a large mob”. The 69-year-old was jailed for 32 months.

Adam and Ellis Wharton

Brothers Adam and Ellis Wharton broke into the torched Spellow Library. They were jailed for 20 and 11 months respectively.

Jordan Davies

Balaclava clad Jordan Davies brandished a weapon near to the scene of a vigil for the victims of the Southport knife attacks then claimed that his daughter had been “stabbed up”. He admitted possession of a bladed article in a public place and breaching a suspended sentence order and was jailed for two years.

Dylan Carey

Dylan Carey attended a vigil for the victims of the Southport stabbings to “lay flowers and light a candle” with his pregnant girlfriend, but instead ended up hurling a tin of paint at the police. He was jailed for 18 months.

Philip Prescott

Philip Prescott was seen taking items out of a bin and hurling them towards police officers. He received 28 months in prison.

Gareth Metcalfe

Gareth Metcalfe “remonstrated” and “pointed and shouted at officers”, being described as being “at the front of the action” during the Southport riot. He admitted violent disorder and nodded as he was handed 40 months.

David Hill

David Hill was caught on a livestreamed TikTok video kicking the windscreen of a police van. He was locked up for two years after admitting violent disorder.

George Clements

George Clements went out for a meal in Liverpool city centre but got drunk and squared up to an old man, kicked a shopper and “gestured towards his penis” on a busy street. He admitted affray and breaching a suspended sentence order and was jailed for two years.

Gerard Cooch

Gerard Cooch threw the contents of a pint glass he was holding over an officer and twice kicked out at shields being held by PCs. He was jailed for 20 months.

Curtis Faure

Curtis Faure was captured in a single photograph “leaning back with a brick in his hand, about to throw it” on the Strand. He was jailed for a year.

Tom Neblett

Tom Neblett was caught on CCTV throwing missiles in the direction of police officers. He was handed 30 months in a young offenders’ institute.

Tony Hazlett

Tony Hazlett was captured on CCTV throwing two missiles in the direction of the police. He was jailed for 28 months.

Paul Dryhurst

Paul Dryhurst was jailed for two years after admitting violent disorder. He was said to have “smiled in satisfaction” after hurling a missile at police, but was recognised by an officer he went to school with.

David Engleby

David Engleby was seen filming the violence in Southport on his mobile phone and chanting “Allah, Allah, who the f*** is Allah?”. He was locked up for 28 months.

David Engleby, 29, of Scarisbrick New Road in Southport, jailed for 28 months after admitting violent disorder.

Luke Summerfield

Luke Summerfield was shown on footage “throwing a projectile towards the police” and then “with a group of males attacking an individual for an unknown reason”, although he was said to be “in a more peace making role”. He was jailed for 26 months.

Luke Summerfield, 29, of Mansfield Street in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, jailed for 26 months after admitting violent disorder.

Joshua Jones

“Football hooligan” Joshua Jones claimed to have attended a three-mile charity walk in memory of the victims of the Southport stabbings before “things got out of hand” and he repeatedly hurled missiles towards police officers. He was jailed for 38 months.

Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson hurled 14 bottles at police before casually walking away from the scene, but tried to run when officers came knocking at his door two weeks later. He was jailed for 32 months.

Luke Moran

Luke Moran smashed the window of a police van with a concrete slab as a PC sat in the driver’s seat. He was jailed for three years.

Nicholas Sinclair

Nicholas Sinclair hurled bricks towards police officers. He was jailed for 28 months after admitting violent disorder.

Thomas Whiehead

Thomas Whitehead, who hurled a missile towards the police, flew home from a holiday in Greece and was sent straight to prison. He admitted violent disorder and was imprisoned for 20 months.

Daniel Carrigan

Daniel Carrigan claimed he visited the seaside town to “pay his respects” to the victims but instead snorted cocaine and trashed a police van. He was jailed for 32 months.

Jake Lowther

Jake Lowther had never found himself in trouble with the police before he hurled missiles at officers. He was handed 18 months in a young offenders’ institute.

Tommy Callaghan

Gas engineer Tommy Callaghan joined in racist chants and threw objects at police. He was jailed for two years and two months.

Tommy Callaghan, 32, of Platt Bridge, Wigan, was jailed for violent disorder.

Rory Allington-Mott

Racist thug Rory Allington-Mott smirked and shook his head as a judge scorned him for the “repulsive” views that saw him target a mosque with bricks during a riot. He was jailed for three years and three months.

Edgar Didzulas hurled a missile towards officers and kicked a resident’s garden wall down. He was jailed for 28 months.

Christopher Beard

Christopher Beard seen with a “maniacal grin” at the front of the crowd during disorder in Southport. The 33-year-old grandad-to-be admitted violent disorder and was locked up for two years and eight months.

Lee Powell

Lee Powell claimed he was in the area to lay flowers and became “trapped” on the wrong side of the police line as he tried to get back to his car. He was jailed for two years and four months for violent disorder.

Lee Powell, 46, of Fountains Road, Liverpool, was jailed for two years and four months for violent disorder.

Adam Latty

Adam Latty was meanwhile identified as being involved by a distinctive tattoo on his arm after he took his top off and tied it around the lower part of his face. He admitted violent disorder and was jailed for 20 months.

Anthony Buck

Anthony Buck’s “curiosity” led to him being hit with batons four times by police officers and PAVA sprayed twice. He admitted violent disorder and was jailed for 28 months.

Connor Piggott

Connor Piggott tried to hide his face as he launched bricks at police officers but his efforts were in vain. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Paul Harrison

Paul Harrison took advantage of his “intimidating stature” to wreak havoc in Southport. He was jailed for 28 months.

Jordan Gibson

Jordan Gibson was also part of the 1,000-strong mob which descended on the town, hurling missiles and joining in racist chants. He was locked up for 30 months after admitting violent disorder.

Louis Instone

Louis Instone previously had ambitions of working on the oil rigs but threw it all away during what were described as a few “moments of stupidity”. The 19-year-old admitted violent disorder and was jailed for 18 months.

Joshua Cropper

Joshua Cropper hurled bricks, a slab of concrete and a wheelie bin at police officers. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was jailed for 30 months.

Jackson Hegarty

Jackson Hegarty told the police he had “ruined his whole life because of one day” after he participated in the city centre riot. The 18-year-old was sentenced to 20 months in a young offender’s institute.

David Finn

David Finn hurled a glass bottle towards police officers as violent scenes erupted on County Road. He was jailed for 22 months.

Jake and Cory Joseph

Jake Joseph sat in the public gallery as he watched his younger sibling being sent down for his part in the violent scenes. However, an eagle-eyed police officer who was also present in the courtroom recognised him too as being present during the riot.

Joseph attempted to conceal his identity with a balaclava and by keeping his hood up as he jumped on top of a carrier van and hurled bricks and concrete slabs at PCs In spite of this, an officer who was present during the sentencing of his brother Cory Joseph before the same court on recognised him from CCTV footage.

Jake Joseph admitted violent disorder. Appearing in the dock wearing a blue Nike tracksuit top, he was jailed for 34 months.

Cory Joseph meanwhile threw bricks at police officers, kicked and climbed on top of a police van and stole a riot shield from inside the vehicle during the widespread trouble. The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was locked up for three years.

Kevin Underwood

Kevin Underwood whipped off his t-shirt and hurled a bin bag as his night of shame was captured on a TikTok video. The grandad pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was sentenced to two years and two months.

Nicholas Mooney

Nicholas Mooney jumped on top of a police van and ripped off the windscreen wiper. He admitted violent disorder and was locked up for 30 months.

Martin Taylor

Martin Taylor was caught throwing “missiles” at police. He was imprisoned for two years and four months for his involvement.

Shannon and Ben Gibson

A dad ranted that “real criminals were being released from prison” when he was arrested alongside his son. Shannon and Ben Gibson hurled bricks at police officers and engaged in racist chanting during the widespread disorder.

The latter was jailed for 32 months. His father was meanwhile sentenced to 28 months, with neither showing any reaction as they were led to the cells.

Lawrence Howarth was identified as having hurled objects at officers and at a police vehicle. He was sentenced to two years and two months in prison.

Aras Magedi used a Liverpool One display as a missile to throw at police. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder and was jailed for nine months.

Liam Lewis used a fire extinguisher to smash his way into a phone shop. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder and burglary and was jailed for two years and eight months.

Adam Harvey

Adam Harvey emptied the contents of a fire extinguisher over customers at Pret A Manger and Black Sheep Coffee in Liverpool ONE. He admitted violent disorder, burglary and assaulting an emergency services worker and was jailed for 34 months.
