A footballer has been left with “severe burns” after being involved in an incident with a firework.
Aaron Chalmers, who plays for Bury, was injured in the “accident” on New Year’s Eve (December 31), his club has revealed.
The 33-year-old missed the Shakers’ 4-0 defeat away at West Didsbury & Chorlton today (Saturday) as a result of his injuries. In an interview shared on the club’s YouTube page, Bury manager Dave McNabb said he expected Chalmers to be out for “a couple of months, maybe a bit more”.
“He has had a bit of an accident on New Year’s Eve with a firework, which has resulted in pretty severe burns,” he said. “It’s not going to be a quick one with Aaron unfortunately, it’s a massive, massive miss.”
In a post on X – formerly Twitter – this evening, Bury Football Club added: “As confirmed in Dave McNabb’s post-match interview today, Aaron was involved in an accident with a firework on New Year’s Eve, resulting in severe burns. We’d like to wish @Azchalmerz all the best in his recovery!”
No further details on the incident were revealed. Prior to joining North West Counties League Premier Division side Bury last month, Chalmers played for a number of Greater Manchester-based non-league teams, including Oldham Athletic, Ashton United and Stalybridge Celtic.
