Former Derby City Council-owned care home in Mickleover set for demolition

A former council-owned care home in Derby is set to be demolished with the intention of the land being transformed in a major redevelopment. Derby City Council has expressed its intention to see Bramble Brook House in Mickleover demolished and a new vision for the land turned into reality.

The new vision for the land, on Rough Heanor Road, is currently being “explored” by council bosses says a planning report. But more details are set to be announced later this year.

A planning application has been submitted by the council itself calling for the site to be bulldozed. It has now stood empty for around seven years since it closed down with windows and doors secured with timber boards. Pictures show the area currently fenced off and a public notices on display in the vicinity informing residents and passers-by of possible demolition work taking place.

The council has said the possibility of keeping the building standing and exploring a new use for it is “unviable”. According to planning documents, it is hoped the demolition could take place between the end of January and the middle of March – should planning permission be approved.

The site is said to comprise three buildings, one sewage pumping station, areas of hard standing used for car parks and pathways and grassland. It is close to the A38 slip roads.

The planning application form by Derby City Council states: “The eventual plan for the site is for redevelopment. Repurposing of the building has been explored and is considered unviable for refurbishment.

“The site is scheduled for redevelopment. A full planning application will be submitted once details are finalised.”

Bramble Brook House closed in June 2017. It came after it was reported the council announced it was considering privatising five care homes in Derby to save money. A decision on the demolition could be made by council planning officers in the coming weeks.
