A thug who headbutted a detention officer has been locked up.
Jack Nawton was arrested on October 12 after his mum called the police for help when the 25-year-old was threatening to jump off the roof of an outbuilding. He said he had been beaten up by four men – and had a severely bruised eye – when his mother made the call.
Nawton was arrested and taken to Middlesbrough police station. When a detention officer tried to wake him, at 12.45am, to be questioned, Nawton appeared confused and disorientated.
The Redcar man saw a nurse who decided that he needed to go to hospital. Whilst he was handcuffed and being put in the back of a police van, he headbutted the detention officer.
The victim fell to the ground, fearing he would pass out. He suffered a nose bleed and had mild concussion.
Nawton later pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has previous convictions for battery and robbery. In 2022, he was jailed for two-years for an attempted robbery.
On Friday, Nawton’s barrister John Nixon, told Teesside Crown Court said that police body worn footage showed “a very, very agitated young man being handcuffed”. He told the court: “There was a lot of shouting, a lot of jostling and he was complaining that the handcuffs were hurting him.
“There appears to be contact between the defendant and the detention officer – that is not on the footage – and the defendant is heard to say, ‘I didn’t mean it!’ and he apologises.”
Nawton’s mother watched from the public gallery as Mr Nixon said that she has raised concerned about her son’s, “depression, anxiety, mood swings and sleep problems.” Judge Timothy Stead told Nawton: “I don’t think you are a wicked person. Your problem is one of a lack of self-control, particularly when intoxicated.”
Nawton, of Westfield Court in Dormanstown, Redcar, began shouting and swearing as the judge jailed him for 10-months.
