Fresh Maid Marian Way warning as commuters told to expect more disruption at busy Nottingham junction

Commuters have been warned of further disruption as work to transform one of Nottingham’s busiest junctions continues. Work began in spring 2024 to turn the large roundabout on Maid Marian Way, which connected the key city centre routes of Derby Road and Lower Parliament Street in Nottingham city centre, into a T-junction.

Nottingham City Council, which is using £8.97 million from the government’s ‘Future High Street Fund’ to fund the project, said the change would make the junction safer for cyclists and pedestrians. However, the new junction resulted in severe delays for motorists and the city’s bus network in October 2024, forcing the city council to apologise and make changes to improve the situation.

The next phase of the works started on Monday, January 6 with officials warning that the changes would lead to delays for commuters due to the need to close lanes on Maid Marian Way northbound and a bus stop. Now, bus operator Nottingham City Transport (NCT) has confirmed some further changes from Monday, January 13.

A spokesperson said: “From Monday 13th January 2025 for around 2 weeks, Navy 4 will not serve the NTU City Campus and will instead start and finish on Angel Row (just off Old Market Square ).

“This temporary change is being made because of the reduction in traffic lanes heading up Maid Marian Way, where the 4 currently operates and turns right into Upper Parliament Street to reach City Campus. Based on our experience to date with these works, we are concerned that the reduced lanes will significantly impact on the reliability of the 4, so have made the decision to alter the route so the buses avoid getting stuck in queues going through this junction.

“NightBus N4 will continue to operate to/from NTU City Campus.” NCT also warned of changes to its Orange 34/C, 35/A/B, 36/U, N34 services.

The spokesperson added: “From Monday 13th January 2025 for around 2 weeks, Orange Line buses cannot serve Angel Row because the right hand turn out of Mount Street will be closed.

“Throughout this period, Orange Line buses will stay on Upper Parliament Street, which is a short walk up Chapel Bar from Angel Row. Orange 34/C and N34 will use the stop coded U3. Orange 35/A/B and 36/U will use the stop coded U4.”

A council spokesperson said: “Works are continuing to progress on Maid Marian Way – thank you for your continued patience. From January 6, 2025, works begin on the kerbs on Maid Marian Way west which will mean there will be lane closures on Maid Marian Way northbound, with some night working and some day working. Please allow extra time for your journey if you plan to travel northbound through the junction.”
