Galway chef’s ultimate kind deed during snowstorm as Met Eireann issue new warnings

A Co Galway business is doing their part in alleviating any suffering or hardship endured by those less mobile than others during the current extreme cold weather event.

Earlier this week, a Galway food company canvassed social media asking that locals spread the good word that they will deliver bread, scones and meals for free to those in need.

Paul Fulop of Emerald Catering took the decision to provide free bread, scones and meals when he saw empty supermarket shelves as the public began stockpiling for a few days.

Paul put out the notice and immediately locals began to help him to help those in need, with Paul heading out on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 January to provide relief to the elderly and infirm. The big-hearted baker and chef even began taking requests for help outside his area of expertise.

Emerald Bites made the generous offer on Sunday 5 Janurary “Free Homemade Bread, Scones & Meals for Those in Need. Considering the situation around shops and the unusually cold weather conditions we are happy to help with what we can.

“If you’re in or around Oughterard/ Rosscahill and could use a little help tomorrow afternoon, I’m offering free homemade bread, scones, and meals for anyone who might be struggling or in need.

“No questions asked, just a little love to brighten your day. I’ll be delivering tomorrow afternoon-please feel free to reach out if you’d like a delivery. Let’s take care of each other!”

The inspirational message saw locals rally and help Emerald Bite and Paul Fulop reach those in need as they thanked the community for their help in looking out for one another: “Thank you for sharing our previous post and we are happy to say that it has reached people who genuinely need help, many thanks to everyone that offered to help with delivering meals as well.

“Over the last couple of days we have met some amazing volunteers who are dedicating much of their time to helping others and we are committed to offering meals on a regular basis going forward.

We have met today someone in need of a gas bottle for heating and would like to kindly ask anyone who would like to donate one for them. We can either bring it to them or share their contact information with you.”

Met Eireann have issued yet another low temperature warning this week, with the latest update including Galway and twelve other counties.

While a Status Orange Low Temperature/Ice warning is in effect for almost all counties until 11am on Thursday, another warning will come into effect at 7pm that evening until 8am on Friday morning.

Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway, Roscommon and Tipperary will be subject to the warning, which is likely to lead to dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays, animal welfare issues and poor visibility.

Met Eireann has warned of extremely cold weather with widespread severe frost and ice, along with lying snow in some areas and patches of freezing fog.
