A widely loved and well known Galway-Mayo border businessman whose grandchildren today represent their GAA club with distinction has died prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes in both counties.
Shrule-native Pat Loughlin was well known in business circles in the south Mayo and the border area of Co Galway. Pat died at home with his loving family, including Kathleen, his wife of 56 years, on 13 January 2025.
Pat Loughlin was a “gentle giant”, and was well respected by his community for keeping the bustle of the area intact, providing countless jobs in his long, long career in business.
Pat was a father of six and a granddad of twenty-two, including Danielle and Chloe Mullin who play with Sylane Camogie in Co Galway.
The club paid a heartfelt tribute to Pat, and offered their condolences to the Loughlin family. Slyane Camogie Club shared the news to social media: “All at Sylane Camogie Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Pat Loughlin, Caher, Shrule, who passed away.
“Pat’s Grand daughters, Danielle & Chloe (Mullin), currently play for our Junior Ladies team. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
Tributes poured in from both sides of Galway-Mayo border as the news reached the community.
One said they have “wonderful memories of a great man.” They praised his kindness and added: “He was always welcoming.” Another said: “We will never forget Pat.”
Many remember Pat “hugely apprecaited” as an employer and was hailed for the extraordinary good that came from his dedication to his community. “He was a lovely man. Always will to help,” another said. Many described Pat Loughlin’s passing as a “great loss”.
While many hailed Pat for his contributions to local business and to his community, many others hailed a family man – a “loving husband” and “great dad and granddad” – who was cherished by his wife, children and grandchildren.
