A Galway restaurant has won wide acclaim for their heartwarming gesture as a snowstorm looms and parts of the road network are expected to become inaccessible.
Met Eireann declared an Orange Weather Warning for eleven counties, and a Yellow Weather Warning for the rest, as up to 25cm of snow is expected amid temperatures of -6C.
The Galleon Restaurant in Salthill, in a great show of compassion, has offered to look after the elderly and infirm with the expectation that many many find it difficult to get around in the coming days.
The Galleon Restaurant has offered to bring food to the “elderly, vulnerable, or isolated” and urged those who know someone who fits the bill to get in touch with staff.
The restaurant offered their services: “If you or someone you know in Salthill is elderly, vulnerable, or isolated during this rare cold snap, please remember, Myself, Astrid, Desi Or Anton, and the team at The Galleon Restaurant are here to support you over the next few days. If you know someone who can’t get out for lunch, please give us a call at 091522963. We’ll happily arrange to bring a warm meal to them.
“There’s always someone on duty and we’re only too glad to make sure your loved ones are cared for and looked after.”
Locals shared the offer far and wide on social media, and praised the “fabulous” gesture. “What a beautiful gesture”, said one. Another praised “the good deed”, hoping it will be remembered by prospective patrons.
Roads are expected to close on Saturday 4 January once the snowstorm expected to blanket much of Ireland begins. Up to 25cm of snow may fall in some parts of Ireland as a sizable drift of snow follows heavy rain on Saturday evening 4 January.
Transport services are already urging travellers to be cautious when making their way to stations and ports across Ireland, advising that anyone hoping to travel should check with their provider for cancellations. Bus EIreann/TFI Townlink has similar advice as they expect the worst in parts of the country: “Due to the ice, snow & rain weather warnings, we advise checking with your transport operator before travelling as there may be delays or curtailments.”
