A 90-year-old man from Gateshead has died after being hit by a car just before Christmas as police now appeal for witnesses.
Peter Douglas was struck by a black BMW shortly after 11.15pm on Monday, December 23, on High West Street, near the Regent Street junction in the town.
Emergency services attended the scene, where Mr Douglas had suffered life threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he sadly passed away on Christmas Day.
His next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers, and the driver of the BMW remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries.
Following the collision, officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit launched an investigation, to help determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Now, they have re-appealed to any witnesses to come forward.
Sergeant Andrew McNally, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of Mr Douglas at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.
“Our investigation into the circumstances around the collision remains very much ongoing and we continue to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time to contact us. We are particularly keen to hear from those who have dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision which could assist our enquiries.
