Highland council school closures – full list as region reels from coldest night and 24-hour snow

Scotland remains in the midst of weather chaos with school closures, train disruptions, and delayed or axed flights continuing to wreak havoc across the country.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice for Scots in the north who were urged to brace for up to 10cm of snow. The alert was extended until midnight tomorrow (January 9), with up to 15cm in store.

Highland communities have arguably been the worst effected by the elements. Loch Glasgarnoch in the Highlands recorded the coldest night of the winter on Sunday night, with temperatures dipping to a spine-tingling minus 13.3C.

The forecast for the week is not particularly encouraging. According to the Met Office, Thursday and Friday will bring continued low temperatures with snow and ice warnings likely to be issued for the most impacted areas.

There is the potential for more snow. Deputy Chief Forecaster, Chris Almond said Thursday will see another cold night with potentially the lowest temperatures of the winter so far.

“15C or so is possible in locations with lying snow in Scotland or northern England,” he said. “In the early hours of Friday, a front arriving from the west will encounter the cold air in place over the UK.

“This could bring further sleet or snowfall for some regions in the south and west, as well as a risk of ice for a time as it moves north-eastwards into central parts, but the extent of this is still uncertain.”

He added: “By Sunday, milder air will have moved in across much of the UK, meaning rain is more likely than snow as we get to the end of the weekend… Western Scotland is most likely to see some showery outbreaks of rain and breezy conditions through Sunday, with conditions further south and east drier and more settled.”

Scots schools were shut as a result of the latest blast of wintry weather but while many have reopened, education bosses have been forced to halt teaching in the Highlands as a blanket of snow and ice cover most of the region.

With that in mind, here is a full list of schools closed in the Highlands on Wednesday, January 8.
