Historic Bath Press site redevelopment takes step forward

Heritage developer City & Country has announced Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios as the architecture firm set to lead the redevelopment of the western end of the historic Bath Press site, in collaboration with landscape architects Grant Associates. The 5.3-acre site was purchased by family-owned City & Country in March this year, already having planning consent.

The company plans to deliver part of the approved scheme, while also exploring the potential for a significantly enhanced architectural solution on the western end of the site that could provide more homes in this well-connected urban location. Having previously worked with both Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Grant Associates, City & Country were eager to collaborate again, confident in their creative vision and reputation to deliver a design befitting this key route into Bath.

Commenting on the appointment, Simon Vernon-Harcourt, Design & Planning Director at City & Country said: “FCB Studios has an amazing reputation for delivering sensitive and responsive architectural projects throughout the country, and I was eager to work with them again, especially as it is in their home city of Bath. Grant Associates will add a wonderful landscape focus to the design, and it will be great fun to work with Keith Bradley and Keith French and their teams again.”

“I have been fortunate to collaborate with some exceptional architects and landscape architects over the years, and I understand that outstanding design is crucial for creating spaces where communities can thrive and grow. We aim to provide buildings that enhance an area and instil a sense of pride,” said Keith Bradley, Founding Partner at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios.

He added: “Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios is thrilled to be partnering with City & Country once again to bring experienced development, sensitivity and design ambition to our first project in Bath. This city is our home, and we have recently worked on some of Bath’s most prominent historic buildings, including the award-winning Bath Abbey Footprint project, and the adjacent Roman Baths and Pump Room Archway visitor facilities.”

“We are excited about the prospect of creating much-needed, high-quality housing in the city, following the successes of our residential projects in London, Manchester, and Cambridge. This includes the RIBA Stirling Prize Accordia Project which we collaborated on with Bath-based Grant Associates Landscape Architects, who will be joining us on the Bath Press collaboration.”

Keith French, Director of Grant Associates, expressed his excitement about the project, stating: “Grant Associates is thrilled to be working with City & County and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios to reimagine the former Bath Press west site. This is a site layered in history, offering an important gateway into our home city and an amazing opportunity to bring it back to life. We’re excited at the prospect of working collaboratively and engaging with residents, and to bring our placemaking and landscape led residential experience to this important piece of the city.”

The Bath Press site, which was previously home to the Pitman Press printing works, has been vacant since 2007 and was demolished a decade later for redevelopment. Located within the World Heritage site boundary, future residents will have access to the city’s rich cultural and historic amenities, including museums, galleries, theatres, and sports facilities.
