ITV Good Morning Britain halted as ‘breaking news’ issued live on air

Susanna Reid brought Good Morning Britain to a standstill with some “breaking news”. The 54 year old presenter was joined by Ed Balls on the ITV show for their third day this week, delivering the day’s top stories to viewers.

In a significant update during the broadcast, Susanna reported that newly released figures indicate a drop in inflation rates to 2.5 percent in December, down from November’s 2.6 percent. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released these latest numbers amidst growing pressure on public finances due to escalating government borrowing costs.

Despite the decrease, inflation is still higher than the Bank of England’s target. Following the announcement, Susanna and Ed welcomed correspondent Jonathan Swain, reporting live from Staffordshire.

Jonathan highlighted that the economy seems to be moving in a positive direction. Broadcasting from a local butchers, he discussed how businesses are diversifying their offerings beyond just fresh meat to manage costs.

“Food prices have contributed to high inflation over the last few years,” he noted, adding that “Wholesale meat prices have gone up by 35 per cent for example.”
