Little girl horrified as ‘rubbish everywhere’ on St Ives beach

A little girl has taken it upon herself to clean up a Cornish beach after finding it littered with all kinds of rubbish. Evie Sprikuts, 4, told her mum “rubbish goes in the bin” before deciding to pick up after others.

Mum Amy Sprikuts, from Camborne, said it was a “completely horrifying sight” to find the beach in St Ives strewn with all sorts including a firework, Christmas cards and a party poppers on Thursday (January 2). She thinks a lot of it was left over from New Year’s Eve parties.

Other items included a random sock and rubber bands. “Highly dangerous for marine life,” she adds. “There was so much litter and plastic washed up across the whole beach; clearly a lot from the Christmas and New Year’s parties.”

She said the sun was coming up and what should have been a beautiful view was spoiled by their findings. “My daughter was shocked and said ‘there’s so much rubbish, it’s everywhere! Rubbish goes in the bin!’

She said that sadly this became a teachable moment for Evie and her son Lowen, aged 2. “I’m a strong believer in being active and present in the community and I’m encouraging my children to do the same. I was shocked to find that there were no litter-picking stations near the beach at all.

“If there had been one we could have collected a lot more than we did. Once more, if communities came together in a group effort that beach could have been so much cleaner in no more than an hour.

“This made me think that on my children’s behalf, we should try and shout about this more, because without raising our voices and awareness then people will continue to act indifferent or not know. With a little community spirit, we can continue to keep our beaches clean and take care of our planet.”
