A road in Glastonbury was closed overnight as multiple fire crews worked to tackle a huge blaze at a derelict property.
Avon and Somerset Police closed the A361 from Woodlands Road to Bere Lane – a stretch of around three miles – for almost six hours in the early hours of this morning (January 4), as crews from Glastonbury, Street, Wells, Wiveliscombe and Shepton Mallet worked to put out the flames.
Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue were called to the scene at around 1.20am this morning, with the road reopening by 6.40am – although the incident remains ongoing as of 11.45am, as crews ensure the last of the fire has been dampened down.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Fire Control received multiple calls reporting a property on fire in Glastonbury. Crews from Glastonbury, Street, and Wells were immediately mobilised.
“After booking in attendance, crew confirmed that the property was well alight, and requested the attendance of the Police for a road closure, and requested two additional fire engines which were mobilised from Shepton Mallet, including the Command Support Unit from Wiveliscombe.
“This was a derelict property measuring approximately 5m x 12m, consisting of two floors. Due to the fire, the property sustained a partial roof collapse, and there was also solar panels involved in the fire.
“Crew got to work using 3x main jets and 1x hose reel jet. Crews made steady progress throughout the early hours of the morning, using 3x main jets, 2x triple extension ladders and breaching tools.
“The incident was shortly scaled back so that 2x fire engines remained in attendance, and they got to work damping down.”
