Live Kent travel updates as roads flood and trains delayed after night of heavy rain

Commuters are facing travel chaos across Kent this morning (Monday, January 6) as the county is battered by heavy rain and strong winds. Following a spell of freezing temperatures, which even lead to some snowfall over the weekend, the Met Office issued a new 24-hour yellow weather warning for rain yesterday morning.

Lifted today at 9am, the warning advised that extensive travel disruption would be likely. Multiple roads across the county have been flooded as some areas saw intense rainfall of 30mm/hr and upwards.

Roads that have seen flooding so far this morning include the B2024 Croydon Road in Westerham, the B2027 Clinton Lane in Bough Beech and Green Lane in Tonbridge. Southeastern passengers have faced disruption across the network due to debris on various railway lines.

The rail operator announced at 5.46am that a train had hit an obstruction at Newington, resulting in delays and cancellations to services through Swale and Medway. It has since been confirmed that the platform at Newington has re-opened and trains are able to stop normally at the station once again.

Elsewhere, a tree on the tracks near Sturry has blocked the line, meaning services are unable to run from Ramsgate towards London via Canterbury West and are instead being diverted. A second tree has been reported on the tracks between Ashford and Wye, causing further disruption.
