Live Wednesday school closures in winter-hit North Staffordshire

A North Staffordshire school has announced it will stay shut today due to ‘severe icy road conditions’. The announcement from Waterhouses Primary Academy comes as temperatures plummeted across the area overnight.

This week has seen scores of schools across Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle and the Moorlands all forced to close as snow battered the area. The wintry conditions had swept in on Sunday only to be seemingly wiped out by heavy rain.

However heavy snow fell again leaving families waking up to a blanket of the white stuff on Monday morning. While only light flurries had been forecast for the early hours of Tuesday, snow came down a lot of heavier.

Those conditions saw a number of primary and secondary schools all being forced to close. Overnight and temperatures plummeted and are around -5C in the Moorlands today, and -3C in the city and Newcastle.

The continued wintry weather has now seen Moorlands-based Waterhouses Primary Academy confirm it is staying shut. An alert on the Staffordshire County Council website states: “Due to the severe icy road conditions and the safety of staff and pupils travelling to school, I have made the difficult decision to close today.

“Learning activities will be sent out in due course by staff via Class DoJo. Keep safe and warm.”
