A woman from Exeter caused chaos on the M5 on Sunday evening (January 12) and led to all traffic being temporarily held when she was caught driving the wrong way on the motorway.
The incident occurred at around 8.25pm on Sunday, with all vehicles held on the Northbound carriageway between Junction 30 for Exeter Services, and Junction 29 for Exeter/ Honiton. Two northbound lanes were then closed at around 9.10pm.
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed a female driver was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after driving southbound towards Exeter on the northbound carriageway.
A police spokesperson said on Monday morning: “Police received multiple reports of a vehicle driving the wrong way on the M5 motorway on Sunday 12 January. The vehicle was reported to be on the northbound carriageway heading southbound towards Exeter.
“Several traffic units were dispatched to the area to locate the vehicle, which was stopped by officers. A 36-year-old woman from Exeter was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs. She is currently still in custody.”
The road was cleared and all lanes reopened shortly before 10pm on Sunday.
