M90 closed in both directions as smoke billows from huge recycling centre blaze

A huge blaze has engulfed a Scots recycling centre as the public are asked to stay away.

The raging inferno erupted in the early hours of January 14 at Lower Friarton Road in Perth next to the M90.

Emergency services raced to the scene and remain in attendance. Due to giant clouds of smoke pouring out from the recycling plant, Friarton Bridge is closed with traffic being directed through the city centre.

Residents have been asked to keep windows closed and stay away from the area while firefighters battle the blaze.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are in attendance at a fire within a recycling centre on Lower Friarton Road, Perth.

“Due to large volumes of smoke we are asking people to avoid the area and close windows and doors in nearby homes. The Friarton Bridge on the M90 is also closed. Thank you for your support.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland added: “Emergency services are in attendance following a fire at a premises in the Friarton Road area of Perth. The Friarton Bridge is currently closed in both directions with traffic on the M90 being diverted through Perth city centre. Locals are advised to avoid the area.”
