A major city centre street has been closed as firefighters battle a blaze at a property in Leicester. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) says crews from Central and Birstall stations were called to Belvoir Street on Tuesday afternoon (January 7).
Multiple firefighters are tackling the blaze using rapid deployment equipment and breathing apparatus, according to LFRS. East Midlands Ambulance Service personnel are also in attendance at the scene, a spokesperson added.
A police cordon remains in place as emergency services deal with the incident. Leicestershire Police say motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

An LFRS spokesperson said: “We were called at 16:36 today regarding a property fire on Belvoir Street in Leicester. Our crews from Central and Birstall Fire Stations are at the scene currently, using rapid deployment equipment and Breathing Apparatus.”
Leicestershire Police confirmed the closure in a statement at 4.57PM , saying: “Belvoir Street, Leicester is currently closed due to a fire. Please find alternative routes and updates will follow.”
