Major update after Soho Road bus stop attack leaves pensioner fighting for life

Detectives have made an arrest after an 82-year-old man was brutally attacked at a city bus stop – leaving him in a critical condition. The pensioner, currently fighting for his life in hospital, was assaulted in broad daylight in Soho Road on Tuesday, January 14.

The victim was waiting at the 74 bus stop, near Boulton Road, when he was set upon. He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a critical state.

West Midlands Police said tonight that the force has arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of wounding. He has been taken into custody for questioning.

A force spokesperson said: “We’ve arrested a suspect after an 82-year-old man was seriously injured when he was attacked in Handsworth. The victim was waiting at the 74 bus stop in Soho Road, near the junction with Boulton Road, when he was attacked at around 3.30pm on Tuesday, January 14.

“We acted on information provided by Soho Road Business Improvement District (BID) this afternoon and detained a 43-year-old man on suspicion of wounding. He has been taken into custody for questioning.

“The injured man remains in a critical condition in hospital. We’re continuing to ask for anyone with information, particularly any dashcam or mobile phone footage, to send it directly to our officers.
