Man (40s) arrested in connection with Paula Canty murder probe

A man in his 40s has been arrested as Gardaí continue their investigation into the murder of Paula Canty.

The man was arrested by Gardaí earlier this afternoon and is currently being held at a Garda station in the southern region. He may be held for up to 24 hours without charge.

Gardaí say they’re continuing to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the 31-year-old’s death. The young woman’s body was found at an apartment in Mallow on Friday, January 3.

Ms Canty had only moved to the north Cork town in recent months, having grown up in Kinsale. It’s understood that her body was found with a stab wound, and Gardaí launched a murder probe after receiving the results of a post-mortem.

Commenting on today’s arrest, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Mallow are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman in her 30s who was found at a residential property on Bridewell Lane, Mallow, Co. Cork on Friday, 3rd January, 2025.

“A man aged in his 40s was arrested this afternoon in relation to this investigation and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the Southern Region. Investigations ongoing”
